My thoughts on Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré
I just returned from a vacation which had me out of the country for two weeks, but while I was gone, my review of Magma’s new record appeared in the print edition of the Washington City Paper, and also online. Short version: it’s no K.A (which might actually be my favorite Magma album ever), but it’s good, and an obviously worthwhile purchase for any Magma fan, despite the steep price tag.

Really, KA tip-top? I found it kind of disappointing, and haven’t gone back to it since the first few listens.

Yeah, I don’t know, I loved it. It’s probably a bit lighter and more accessible than many of the classic-era albums, but I loved the melodies and the vocal interplay. You may like Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré better - it’s got more of the relentless, dark feel of some of the other classic material.

Since you are the dude who got me into Magma (I first listened to them after reading reviews on Ground and Sky), I’ve been curious to hear your thoughts on the new album. For me, Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré is the pinnacle of Magma’s creative output- the perfect execution of all the elements that make their masterworks so special. Although I will say, E.R.’s climax is not quite as explosive as K.A.’s - that “hallelujah” part is over-the-top awesome.

Hey Joe -
I do get the feeling that this one is a grower, and that I’ll like it even more with more spins. The City Paper review is not super substantive because I felt like I needed to spend a lot of time introducing the unsuspecting reader to zeuhl - sometime in the future I may write a more in-depth review here if I feel so inspired.
As Sean McFee observed, the relatively subdued beginning and ending of the piece make it seem a little less in-your-face awesome as, say, K.A, but that’s not a great reason to like it less. We’ll see…
